REVIEW: Long regarded as the best of the rock’n’roll movies, Frank Tashlin’s high-voltage candy-coloured satire on '50s pop culture stands out as a masterpiece.
The story revolves around a retired racketeer's attempts to transform his girlfriend, Jayne Mansfield (in her first starring role), into a singer by hiring an alcoholic agent (Tom Ewell) to carry out the transformation. Unfortunately, for Tom the task is a lot more difficult than first thought as Jayne is tone-deaf. One of the highlights of the movie is when Jayne glides across the dance floor of a night club wearing a slinky low cut red evening gown while Little Richard and his band belt out “She’s Got It” on the night club’s stage. Filmed in glorious colour the movie features classic performances from Little Richard, The Platters, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps, The Treniers, The Chuckles, Johnny Olenn, Nino Tempo, Eddie Cochran, Abbey Lincoln and Eddie Fontaine.
