REVIEW: Formed in Detroit in the late ‘50s while the five founder members were still at High School. The Spinners took their name in 1961 when they signed to the Tri-Phi label. The name Detroit was added in the UK to avoid confusion with a popular folk group of the same name. Noted composer Harvey Fuqua sang lead vocals on the Detroit Spinners debut single “That’s What Girls Are Made For”, which entered the Top 30 in the US and also reached #5 in the R&B chart in 1963. Shortly afterwards they were signed to Motown Records but were largely over-shadowed by the label’s other signings who included The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and The Four Tops. They later came into their own when they recorded a Stevie Wonder song, “It’s A Shame” which reached the Top 20 in both the US and the UK. They later signed with Atlantic Records on the recommendation of Aretha Franklin. Over the years they have continued to record for various labels with a some success but their main forte is to perform on the nostalgia circuit. Three of the Detroit Spinners line up in this concert are original members, Henry Farnborough, Frank Washington and Bobbie Smith.
