REVIEW: For her first film in two years Universal hired respected French director Jean Renior to helm what was to be Deanna’s first dramatic role. However, when the film was released it included songs and the director’s credit went to Bruce Manning, the film’s producer.
Miss Durbin plays missionary Ruth Kirke, who passes herself off as rich widow, Mrs. Holliday, in order to smuggle a group of Chinese orphans into the US with the help of sympathetic steward Barry Fitzgerald. Complications arise when she uses the Holliday mansion to house the children and falls in love with her “late husband’s” grandson (Edmond O’Brien). And even more so when Mr. Holliday himself returns from the dead.
Nominated for an Academy Award for Hans Salter and Frank Skinner’s musical score. Musical highlights include Vissi D’Arte form Pucinni’s Tosca, Mighty Lak’a Rose, Lullaby, The Old Refrain.
