REVIEW: SUGAR RAY ROBINSON – POETRY IN MOTION – Fighting in divisions from Lightweight up to Light Heavyweight, Sugar Ray Robinson was the first boxer to be described as the best ‘pound -for pound’ fighter in the world. Cited as the greatest boxer of the 20th century by Associated Press, and as the greatest boxer in history by ESPN, other notable names who point to Robinson as the best in the business include none other than Joe Louis and Muhammed Ali.
Born Walker Smith Jr, it took 75 professional fights before Sugar Ray Robinson got his shot at the World Welterweight Title, along the way establishing a legendary rivalry with ‘The Raging Bull’ Jake LaMotta. Stepping up to the Middleweight meant once again facing LaMotta in what became Known as “The St Valentine’s Day Massacre’, as well as Hall of Fame boxers such as Carmen Basilio and Gene ‘Cyclone’ Fullmer.
Action from Robinson’s greatest clashes are presented here, alongside analysis from boxing experts such as Bert Randolph Sugar, Angelo Dundee and former rival Carmen Basilio, showcasing the power and grace and skill of the fighter whose style was famously ‘as sweet as sugar’.
ROCKY MARCIANO – GREATEST HITS – Rocky Marciano’s name will rightly live on forever in boxing folklore, but he is more than just a name in boxing’s history books, as this incredible programme shows. See for yourself the power and skill of Rocky in action against the world had to offer. Having defeated his boxing idol Joe Louis, ending the great man’s career, Marciano faced off against the likes of Lee Savold, Harry Matthews, the British champion Don Cockell and the legendary Champ ‘Jersey’ Joe Walcott, as fighter after fighter tried to stop his domination of the heavyweight division. As with Louis, Marciano would be the last boxer that Walcott would ever face. See for yourself what it took to be the Champ, and to stay the Champ. No one ever did it like Rocky.
UNDEFEATED - There are few achievements in any sport to rival that accomplished by Rocco Francis Marchegiano, as the man they called Rocky did the the unthinkable: claimed the World Heavyweight Title, defended it and retired…undefeated. Rocky Marciano’s climb to the top of the boxing world started in supreme fashion, with 16 straight knockout victories. It would take 42 fights, and 42 wins to earn Rocky a shot at the titles, but once there, no one would ever take it away from him.
