REVIEW: One of four movies featuring Mr Rock & Roll, Alan Freed. The movie really is no more than a vehicle for featuring quite a number of rock’n’roll artists from the day. The artists featured here are almost like a Who’s Who of rock’n’roll. Those featured are Alan Freed and His Rock’n’Roll Band, Teddy Randazzo, The Moonglows, Chuck Berry, LaVern Baker, Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, The Flamingos, Johnny Burnette Trio, Jimmy Cavello & His House Rockers, Cirino & The Bowties, Ivy Schulman and The Coney Island Kids. Also featured is the voice of Connie Francis lip-synced to by Tuesday Weld in her very first movie appearance. The story line is rather pathetic, but, who cares when you have such a line up of talent and some classic performances. Probably the highlight would be the footage of The Johnny Burnette Trio performing (at the time, since then more footage has been discovered) “Lonesome Train (On A Lonesome Track)”.

Also featured as part of this double feature DVD is The Alan Freed Story as described by rock music historian, Michael Ochs. He chronicles the rise and fall of Alan Freed as the voice of rock’n’roll and the payola scandal that ended his career. In itself a very important chapter in rock’n’roll music. The quality is very good both visually and sound wise. One of the better rock’n’roll movies of the day mainly because of all the performances contained here.
