REVIEW: Max Schmeling – The Championship Years – Many boxers bear the burden of representing their local gym, their hometown or their country, but for Germany’s Max Schmeling in the 1930s to be the poster-boy for “German superiority” was a particularly tough mantle to wear. Despite being hailed as a champion of Germany and the Nazis, Schmeling in reality wanted nothing to do with the Nazi Party, even going so far as to risk his life by saving two Jewish boys from capture in 1938.

Journey back through the annals of boxing’s rich history and witness Schmeling’s years as Heavyweight World Champion. June 1930, at the classically American venue of New York’s Yankee Stadium, saw Schmeling claim the Heavyweight crown from Jack Sharkey in controversial circumstances, as Sharkey was disqualified for a low blow. Schmeling’s first title defence saw him take on “Young” Stribling, at the time the boxer with the most KOs in history, with the fight ending in a shock knockout with just 15 seconds remaining in the 15-round affair. Finally, a tense rematch with Sharkey, in front of 61,000 fans, ended once again in controversy. Experience the action from these legendary fights and witness the scientific style and deadly right hand that made Schmeling a champion.

Joe Louis – The Brown Bomber – Joe Louis’ place in boxing history is assured. Ranked by many as the greatest Heavyweight who ever lived, and by The Ring magazine as the #1 Greatest Puncher Of All Time, the man born Joseph Louis Barrow would go on to achieve true boxing greatness, attaining the World Heavyweight Title and defending it a record 25 times. During a time in American history when segregation was a way of life and black Americans were treated as second class citizens, Louis was a champion that all of America could get behind. An absolute must for any boxing fan.
