REVIEW: There will never be another Marty Robbins or anyone to compare with him. In everything he undertook, he gave 150% and was one of the most beloved of performers in Country Music. He was the consummate entertainer and showman; he could handle a ballad as ably as he could a gunfighter ballad or an up-tempo number; he was a demon card player and no one who ever knew him had a bad word for him. Who could forget that smile as he held his three-quarter-size guitar and played with his songs and with his audience in that self-mocking style, all the time with that wonderful smile on his face. Marty’s skills knew no boundaries and he skipped with apparent effortlessness from style to style, successfully recording pop standards, rockabilly, gunfighter songs from the Mexican border, Hawaiian music and ballads in addition to country.
This anthology includes almost all his major hits and there were plenty of them-during the period 1955 through to 1974, he had at least one Top Ten single every year, a just reward for a legend who viewed his role in country music as “better that working for a living”.
