JOSH WHITE IS PROBABLY BEST REMEMBERED FOR HIS INVOLVEMENT IN THE SOCIAL PROTEST MOVEMENT IN THE '40s. HIS INVOLVEMENT IN MUSIC BEGAN WHEN HE WAS SEVEN YEARS OF AGE WHEN HE WAS HIRED OUT BY HIS MOTHER AS LEAD BOY TO BLIND SINGER JOHN HENRY “MAN” ARNOLD. HIS LIFE AS A LEAD BOY CONTINUED WITH THE LIKES OF JOE WALKER, BLIND WILLIE WALKER, ARCHIE JACKSON AS WELL AS BLIND BLAKE AND BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON. HIS FIRST TASTE AT RECORDING CAME IN 1928 WHEN HE ACCOMPANIED BLIND JOE TAGGART ON A PARAMOUNT SESSION IN CHICAGO IN 1928. IN APRIL 1932 HE CUT TWENTY SONGS FOR THE NEW YORK BASED ARC LABEL. HE LATER SEVERELY INJURED HIS HAND WHICH CURTAILED HIS CAREER. HE RECOMMENCED RECORDING IN 1940 AND HIS REPERTOIRE HAD SIGNIFICANTLY ALTERED TO REFLECT HIS ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE PROTEST MOVEMENT. HIS LAST RECORDINGS CAME IN 1963 INCLUDING ONE SESSION FEATURING SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON ON HARMONICA. HE DIED IN 1969 DURING OPEN HEART SURGERY.
