NOT MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT JOHNNY SPARROW. HE FIRST EMERGED ON THE SCENE IN 1944 AND PLAYED SAXOPHONE IN SEVERAL BANDS OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS INCLUDING STINTS WITH LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND LIONEL HAMPTON. HE RECORDED FOR SEVERAL LABELS AND HAD HIS BIGGEST SUCCESS IN 1949 WITH “SPARROW FLIGHT” FOR NATIONAL. IN 1952 HE SIGNED WITH GOTHAM RECORDS AND RECORDED THE SIDES FEATURED HERE INCLUDING A REMAKE OF “SPARROW FLIGHT”, MOST OF WHICH WERE NOT RELEASED AT THE TIME. HIS CONTRACT WITH GOTHAM ENDED IN 1953 AND HE FADED INTO OBSCURITY.
