REVIEW: Jack Nicholson plays Francis Phelan a washed up ballplayer who deserted his family back in the 1910s, when he accidently killed his infant son by dropping him. Since that time, Phelan has been a shabby barfly, living from drink to drink.

Francis Phelan (Nicholson), an aimless vagabond ready to confront the family he abandoned long ago wanders the streets back in his hometown after a 22 year absence.
While sharing his whiskey with his longtime ‘pal’ Helen (Streep), Francis reveals the dark secrets of his past, the painful memories from which he once tried to escape… But must now reconcile.
