REVIEW: Hollywood Canteen is one of the most successful of all the war-effort musicals. The Hollywood Canteen was a club for GI's where Joan Crawford might be over-easy you some eggs and John Garfield might scrub out the frying pan. The movies is a snappy, starry salute to that World War 11 landmark, built around a storyline involving a corporal who wins a date with winsome Joan Leslie. At ease, soldiers, as real-life Canteen co-founders Bette Davis and Garfield plus dozens more luminaries – from Jack Benny to Barbara Stanwyck to Roy Rogers and Trigger – dazzle the troops and modern fans in “a great big scrambled vaudeville show with enough talent to have made a dozen fine movies”, the list is endless – The Andrews Sisters, Jack Benny, Joe E Brown, Eddie Cantor, Kitty Carlisle, Jack Carson, Dane Clark, Joan Crawford, Helmut Dantine, Bette Davis, Faye Emerson and many many more including Jimmy Dorsey and his band and Carmen Cavallaro and Orchestra along with the Golden Gate Quartet and the Sons Of The Pioneers.
