DELBERT BARKER WAS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS “KING OF THE COVERS”. A COUNTRY SINGER AT HEART HE RECORDED MANY A COVER VERSION OF A CHART HIT FOR A VARIETY OF SMALL LABELS WHICH TOOK THE CHART HIT AND HAD SINGERS SUCH AS DELBERT RECORD A COVER VERSION IN A SIMILAR VOICE TO THE ORIGINAL AND THESE WERE SOLD TO THE PUBLIC AT A CONSIDERABLY LOWER PRICE THAN THE ORIGINAL. IN AN INTERVIEW HE CONFIDED THAT HE “HAD FIVE DIFFERENT VOICES. I DID CARL SMITH, HANK WILLIAMS, HANK THOMPSON, FARON YOUNG AND SOME LEFTY FRIZZELL”. HE IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS IMITATION OF HANK WILLIAMS. IN 1956 HE RECORDED A CREDIBLE VERSION OF “BLUE SUEDE SHOES” THAT WAS RELEASED ON BOTH “GATEWAY” AND “BIG 4” AND LATER ON THE “HEP’ LABEL BUT THIS TIME IT WAS CREDITED TO TERRY WALL. LATER HE RECORDED UNDER HIS OWN NAME FOR “KING”. HIS INITIAL SESSION FOR “KING” SAW HIM RELEASE “NO GOOD ROBIN HOOD” AND “ BIG BAND JUMP”. HE WAS ALSO AN ACCOMPLISHED SONGWRITER AND PENNED IN 1968 “YOU ALMOST SLIPPED MY MIND” WHICH WAS TAKEN TO #1 BY CHARLEY PRIDE. GREAT HISTORICAL RECORDINGS ****
