AS THE SON OF VAUDEVILLIANS ROBERT AND BESS RICH, THE YOUNG BUDDY WAS INTRODUCED TO AUDIENCES AT THE AMAZING AGE OF TWO. WITH HIS NATURALLY BORN SENSE OF RHYTHM, HE PERFORMED REGULARLY ON BROADWAY AT THE AGE OF FOUR AND BY 1921 WAS ALREADY A SEASONED SOLO PERFORMER WITH HIS VAUDEVILLE ACT "TRAPS THE DRUM WONDER". WITHOUT A REAL TEACHER THE YOUNG BUDDY LITERALLY TAUGHT HIMSELF TO PLAY THE DRUMS, TO TAP-DANCE AND TO SING. IN 1937, BUDDY BEGAN THE SECOND STAGE OF HIS PROFESSIONAL CAREER WHEN HE STARTED PLAYING WITH JOE MARSALA AT NEW YORK'S "HICKORY HOUSE". BUDDY THEN PLAYED WITH SEVERAL BANDS BEFORE TEAMING UP WITH TOMMY DORSEY IN 1939. TOMMY DORSEY'S BAND GAVE BUDDY THE CHANCE TO DEVELOP HIS OWN STYLE THAT COMBINED WITH THE AMAZING TECHNIQUE, LAID THE FOUNDATIONS FOR SOME OF SENSATIONAL DRUM-SOLOS THAT MADE HIM WORLD FAMOUS LATER ON.
IN 1945, BUDDY MADE HIS RECORDING DEBUT WITH THE ALBUM "A YOUNG MAN AND HIS DRUMS" THAT WAS RELEASED ON GIANT OF JAZZ. BUDDY HAS OFTEN BEEN DESCRIBED AS A MUSICAL GENIUS AND A PERFECTIONIST WHO NEVER GAVE HIS MUSIC LESS THAN 100% AND EXPECTED THE SAME INPUT FROM HIS SIDEMEN. BUDDY DIED IN LOS ANGELES ON APRIL 2ND, 1987. AT THE FUNERAL HIS FRIEND, JAZZ LEGEND GENE KRUPA, PAID TRIBUTE TO BUDDY WITH THE WORDS "HE WAS THE GREATEST DRUMMER TO HAVE DRAWN BREATH". ALL THE TRACKS ON THIS ALBUM WERE RECORDED BETWEEN MAY 21, 1946 AND OCTOBER 26, 1948 AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS. BRILLIANT ******
