MOST SUCCESSFUL BANDS HAVE A HISTORY THAT EXTENDS WAY BEYOND THEIR FIRST HIT RECORD. THE STRAY CATS WERE NO EXCEPTION. BEFORE THE STRAY CATS THERE WAS BRIAN SETZER & THE TOMCATS WHICH CONSISTED OF, INITIALLY, BRIAN SETZER ON GUITAR AND VOCALS, HIS BROTHER GARY SETZER ON DRUMS AND BOB BEECHER ON BASS. THEY BEGAN PLAYING ON LONG ISLAND IN 1979 AT CLUB’S SUCH AS B.J.’s LOUNGE AND T.K.’S. WHEN THE BAND SPLIT UP BRIAN TEAMED UP WITH A COUPLE OF LONG ISLAND BUDDIES – JIM McDONNELL (BILLED AS SLIM JIM PHANTOM) ON DRUMS AND LEE DRUCKER (BILLED AS LEE ROCKER) ON BASS. THEY HEADED OFF TO LONDON CUTTING A COUPLE OF ENGLISH ALBUMS AND THE REST, AS THEY, SAY IS HISTORY.
BEFORE THE STRAY CATS THERE WERE SOME TOMCATS TAPES MADE OF THEIR LIVE PERFORMANCES WHICH IS THE SOURCE OF THIS SEVEN VOLUME SET OF CDs. WHILE THE AUDIO IS NOT OPTIMUM DUE TO THE AGE OF THE TAPES THEY ARE VERY LISTENABLE DESPITE A LITTLE DISTORTION HERE AND THERE AND GIVE A GREAT INSIGHT INTO WHAT WAS TO FOLLOW.
