Coach Shane Flanagan instilled a confidence that the Sharks could win from any situation. They were as adapt at leading from the front as they were at coming from behind and they had turned their home ground into a graveyard for travelling teams. They had a backline that was one of the best in the competition with strike weapons on either side of the ruck being guided by experienced campaigner Michael Ennis and journeyman James Maloney. Their fast and gritty forward pack never took a backwards step and took it to the best behind their tireless leader Paul Gatten, while the mercurial Ben Barba recaptured the form that saw him claim the Dally M Medal, bringing an unpredictability that few teams had the answer to.
