REVIEW: When Paul Green took over the reins of the North Queensland Cowboys in 2014 he brought with him a discipline and steely determination that had been lacking in previous years. The Cowboys were desperate to erase the memories of the past few seasons devastating Finals defeats but on the back of a dominant forward pack the Cowboys’ skill and determination was on show during a watershed 2015 season where the boys from the North reigned supreme!

Any team with Johnathan Thurston on the park was not to be underestimated, but for too long Cowboys’ sides relied too much on the future Immortal, however, with the emergence of young guns Michael Morgan and Jake Granville and a fully fit Lachlan Coote the Cowboys had amassed one of the most impressive “spines” in the NRL. Much of the Cowboys success was dependent on their intimidating forward pack getting over the advantage line, giving time and space to their impressive backline and on the biggest stage Matt Scott, James Tamou, Jason Taumalolo, Gavin Cooper and Ethan Lowe did just that, providing the perfect platform for the Cowboys backline to show their true championship credentials.

With the weight of North Queensland on their shoulders, the Cowboys didn’t have to look far for inspiration, a place in the history books beckoned. After travelling to Melbourne and putting the Storm to the sword, the Cowboys booked their place in a historic all Queensland Grand Final, the first in NRL history. Having learnt how to win away from home the Cowboys were not to be denied victory, the Provan-Summons Trophy would finally find a home in the North, and their inspirational playmaker Johnathan Thurston, who for so long had carried the hopes of North Queensland would finally lead his team to the Premiership glory!
