REVIEW: This was payback time for the Tigers.

Having been on the wrong end of the of a goal kicking spree the previous year against Carlton, Richmond was presented with its chance to atone in the best way possible. After a tight opening, Richmond began to assume control through the second term and by half time it was on top of its archrival.

The first half had been incident packed with Carlton great John Nicholls decked by Richmond defender Laurie Fowler after only three minutes. Into the second quarter it was on again with some menacing blows thrown, one concussing champion Carlton full-back Geoff Southby. It was clear that nothing was going to stop Richmond this day.

Led by the effective yet unfashionable Kevin Sheedy, Richmond drove hard at Carlton’s backline and led by thirty-eight points at the last change. The brilliance of Ian Stewart in the middle and Kevin Bartlett around the pack was proving too much for the Blues to handle and the match was effectively all over by the last change.

Memories lingered of 1970 and Carlton did reduce the margin to eighteen points in the final quarter, but it was a message to Richmond to find another gear and that’s just what this very good Richmond side did. The haunting memories which had lingered from the previous season had well and truly been buried.
