REVIEW: The advent of rock’n’roll in the mid-1950s made little impact upon TV in the UK except in terms of critical news coverage. However, in the USA, where commercial TV had been established for many years, the situation was radically different. Indeed, had it not been for the enormous exposure provided through the Ed Sullivan Show for the young Elvis Presley in 1956, the course of popular music history may have been very different. In addition to the major network channels, there were a myriad of local TV stations all of which were competing for the current popular artists that would focus attention on them and maintain their ratings. ?
