REVIEW: Jane Powell replaced Judy Garland to play Fred Astaire’s sister in this delightful 1951 musical set in England at the time of Princess Elizabeth’s Wedding to Phillip Mountbatten, and proved to be one of his brightest, most engaging ladies.
The plot echoes Fred and Adele Astaire’s triumphant British tour in 1929 which ended in her engagement to Lord Cavendish, Fred also dances with the prime minister’s daughter/ Sarah Churchill; a hat-stand: and by himself on the walls and ceiling of a hotel room. It was directed by Stanley Donen, and the songs in the film were composed by Burton Lane with words by Alan Jay Lerner, Hits included: “Too Late Now”, “I Left My Hat In Haiti” and the vaudeville number, “How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Love You When You Know I’ve Been A Liar All My Life”. Also in the cast are Peter Lawford and Keenan Wynn playing twins.
