REVIEW: Little known rock’n’roll movie except to diehard collectors. Regarded as a cult classic this movie was made in 1957 and stars among others, Johnny Carroll. The story centres around a rock’n’roll club known as the Hot Rock Club so named, co-incidentally, after one of Johnny Carroll’s classic rockabilly songs “Hot Rock”. The premises used by the the Hot Rock Club has been made available to them free of charge, however, the owner has received an offer from a gangster to rent the premises and so the Hot Rock Club is asked to vacate. The club asks if there is any way they can remain in the premises and the owner tells them that if they can match the rent then they can stay. Thereby follows efforts by the club to raise funds which includes a benefit concert by Johnny Carroll and a host of other performers.

The acting leaves a lot to be desired as did many of the rock’n’roll movies of the '50s and early '60s, however, there is some great music in the film much of which is performed “live” in a recording studio which is used as the setting for the concert. The visual quality of the film is only fair, but, is slightly better than the quality of the video which was circulating some years ago. Other artists performing in the movie alongside Johnny Carroll are Rosco Gordon, Preacher Smith & The Deacons, Don Coats & The Bon Aires, The Five Stars, The Cell Block Seven and The Belew Twins. For a number of these artists their appearance in the movie is the only known footage of the artist. Also featured is Kay Wheeler the so called Queen Of Rock’n’Roll doing the Rock’n’Bop. A must for collectors!!
