MOST ROCKABILLY ENTHUSIASTS WOULD BE AWARE OF THE HISTORY BETWEEN CARL PERKINS AND SUN RECORDS. CARL AUDITIONED FOR SAM PHILLIPS IN EARLY OCTOBER, 1954, AFTER HEARING ELVIS PRESLEY’S VERSION OF “BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY’ ON THE RADIO. HIS FIRST RECORD FOR SAM PHILLIPS WAS “MOVIE MAGG” B/W “TURN AROUND” RELEASED ON THE PHILLIPS OWNED FLIP LABEL ON MARCH 19, 1955, BUT FEW PEOPLE EXCEPT HARD-CORE CARL PERKINS FANS WOULD KNOW THAT CARL AND HIS BROTHER JAY HAD ACTUALLY BEEN PERFORMING SINCE 1946 WHEN CARL WAS JUST 14 YEARS OF AGE. ONE OF THE SONGS THEY PLAYED IN THEIR REPERTOIRE WAS AN UPBEAT VERSION OF “BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY”.

AROUND THE TIME THAT CARL PUT TOGETHER HIS FIRST BAND, A LOCAL BY THE NAME OF STANTON LITTLEJOHN SET UP A MAKESHIFT RECORDING STUDIO USING A SECONDHAND RECORDING CONSOLE IN THE FRONT PARLOUR OF HIS HOUSE JUST OFF HIGHWAY 45 SOUTH WHERE HE PRODUCED ONE-OFF ACETATE DISCS. AS TO HOW CARL CAME TO ATTEND LITTLEJOHN’S STUDIO IS NOT KNOWN, HOWEVER, AT THE SESSION CARL RECORDED A VERSION OF THE EDDY ARNOLD SONG “THERE’S BEEN A CHANGE IN ME”. THE FLIP-SIDE WAS AN INSTRUMENTAL BY THE SOUTHERN PLAYBOYS TITLED “DEVILS DREAM”. AT A SECOND SESSION AT LITTLEJOHN’S AROUND A YEAR LATER CARL RECORDED “DRINKIN’ WINE SPO-DEE-O-DEE” AND “GOOD ROCKIN' TONIGHT”.

BEAR FAMILY IN IT’S USUAL HOUND DOG FASHION HAS MANAGED TO SNIFF OUT THESE EARLY RECORDINGS BY CARL AND RELEASED THEM ON THIS 10” 33-1/3 RPM DISC ALONG WITH “DEVILS DREAM” AND ON THE FLIP SIDE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED ALTERNATE TAKES OF FIVE OF CARL’S BETTER KNOW SUN RECORDINGS. AS A BONUS BEAR FAMILY HAVE INCLUDED A CD VERSION OF THE ALBUM AS A PACKAGE DEAL SO YOU DON’T WEAR OUT THE VINYL RECORD. BEAR FAMILY HAS LIMITED THE RELEASE TO 2000 COPIES ONLY. SUPERB PIECE OF ROCKABILLY HISTORY BY WHO ELSE BUT BEAR FAMILY *****
